The Tech Clinic

A friendly, unhurried place to bring whatever isn’t behaving. No appointment, no charge to residents, and absolutely no jargon.
When and where

Every Friday morning, in the restaurant

I’ve been running the drop-in clinic at Wadswick Green in Corsham for nine years, these days paid for by Rangeford Villages. Residents wander down with a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a question, and we work through it together.
There’s no need to book and nothing to pay. Come at ten, come at half eleven, come every week if you like. And if the queue is long I’ll usually still be around the village well into the afternoon.
Between six and twelve people come to see me on a typical Friday, and I help a good many more over the phone during the rest of the week.

Free to residents

Not a Wadswick Green resident? The clinic is for people who live at the village, but I visit homes right across Wiltshire and Berkshire too, and I’m always happy to talk to another village about starting a clinic of their own.

How it works

Nothing complicated about it

You don’t need to explain the problem in the right words. “It’s gone funny” is a perfectly good start.
1

Just turn up

No appointment, no list, no form to fill in. Come down to the restaurant any Friday between 10 and 12.
2

Bring the thing

Whatever is causing the trouble, and its charger, if you can find it. If it’s too big to carry, just describe it.
3

We sort it together

I’ll fix it and show you what I did, at whatever pace suits you. Ask me to repeat it as many times as you like.
4

Come back any time

If it happens again, or something new crops up, I’m here next Friday. Nobody has ever asked me too many questions.
Typical Friday

The things people bring me most

“My phone has stopped doing the thing”

Updates, storage full, contacts vanished, ringer off, screen too small to read.

“The television is speaking German”

Smart TVs, sound bars, remotes with too many buttons, streaming that has logged itself out.

“The internet keeps dropping out”

Wi-fi that won’t reach the bedroom, new routers, passwords nobody wrote down.

“Is this email a scam?”

Suspicious messages, cold calls, fake delivery texts. Bring them to me before you click.

“I want to see the grandchildren”

Video calls set up properly, with big buttons and no fiddling about every time.

“The printer refuses to print”

Drivers, ink, wireless printing from a phone, and scanning something to send to the family.
From the residents

In their words, not mine

“Having Ollie here is a necessity, so many of us depend on him, we simply wouldn’t manage without him!”

“When people like us move into the village, they typically get smart TVs and sound systems and without his help, it would be impossible to use them.”

If you’d rather I came to you

Home visits, across Wiltshire and Berkshire

Some jobs simply can’t be carried down to the restaurant: a television on the wall, a computer under the desk, a router in the hall cupboard. So I come to you instead.
It’s £50 an hour with no call-out fee, and if I can’t fix it you don’t pay. Small jobs I don’t charge for at all. Plenty of things I can sort out over the phone without coming at all.

“If it takes me five minutes, it’s on me.”

You should never worry about what a bill might say. Small jobs are free, there’s no call-out fee, and no fix means no fee.
Questions

Things people often ask

No. The clinic is a drop-in, so you can simply come along on the Friday morning. If you’d prefer a set time at home instead, ring me and we’ll arrange one.

Nothing at all. Rangeford Villages pay for the clinic so it’s free for residents of Wadswick Green. You only pay if you ask me to visit you at home, and that’s £50 an hour with no call-out fee.

Not in the slightest. That is precisely why the clinic exists. I don’t use jargon, I don’t rush, and I’m very happy to explain the same thing three times over. Most people leave able to do it themselves, which is the whole point.

The device itself and its charger if you can. If you know any passwords or the email address you use, that helps enormously, but don’t worry if you don’t, we can usually work around it.

Yes, and please do ask. Bring me the email, the text or the phone number before you reply to anything or hand over any details. I’d far rather look at ten harmless messages than one that wasn’t.

Very likely, yes. I already do exactly this for Rangeford Villages at Wadswick Green. If you manage a retirement village or care home, here’s how it works.

Stuck with something? Just ring.

There is no such thing as a silly question, and I’ve never once minded being asked.
